Every day, we consume around 2.25 billion cups of coffee globally! Coffee contains a number of nutrients, including riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), magnesium, potassium, and various phenolic compounds, or antioxidants. It also contains 1,5 grams (per cup) of soluble dietary fibre.
Benefits include protection against:
*Type 2 diabetes
*Parkinson’s disease
*Liver disease
*Liver cancer
*Cardiovascular problems (like a stroke)
*Cognitive decline due to ageing
“Women who drank 1-3 cups of coffee daily were more likely to reach age 70+ in good physical, mental, and cognitive health, and with fewer chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.”
Did you know?
*A cup of coffee is only around 2 calories (no milk or sugar). Only 18% of you take yours black.
*Coffee beans contain polyphenols, which are a type of antioxidant. Antioxidants can help protect the body against free radical damage.
Risks
Like everything else in wellness, a balanced approach is best. More than three cups of coffee a day, can result in:
*Bone fractures
*Complications during pregnancy
*Gastroesophageal reflux disease
*Increased anxiety

(A study from 2016 concluded that a high intake of caffeine during adolescence could lead to permanent changes in the brain).
*Exposure to toxic ingredients like mycotoxins and acrylamide.
*Adverse interactions with certain psychiatric drugs, thyroid medications, heartburn drugs, and antibiotics.
*Possible spinal bone loss in women who drink more than 300 milligrams (mg) per day and who do not consume enough calcium.
*An increase in blood pressure.
*An increase in the risk of myocardial ischemia, which is a type of heart disease, if a person consumes coffee during exercise.
*Negative effects on a growing foetus (low birth weight), if a person consumes a large amount of coffee during pregnancy.
*Worsened symptoms of certain mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Tip: Drink your coffee before noon for maximum benefits & to lessen sleep disruption! Quality over quantity!
