Think you know your way around a pinched nerve? Think again! Even though it’s fairly common amongst all ages, here’s a few facts you might not know:
Prevention is better than cure…
* Warming up properly before exercise - especially in winter - is key to prevention.
Therapies that can help…
* Strapping (adhesive plaster/ tape is placed in overlapping strips for the purpose of restricting movement or immobilising a body part).
* Needling (inserting thin needles into trigger points in muscles to relieve pain and improve function).
* RICE - Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate - works!
Pain categories…
* A level 2 is the pain level of the average pinched nerve
* A level 6-7 needs anti-inflammatories and pain management. A level 7 is usually accompanied by nausea and lack of appetite.
* A level 8 and up, requires medical intervention.
Feeling low is normal…
* Research suggests that 10% - 50% of us may experience depressive symptoms after an injury. A supportive environment can make all the difference!
Location, location, location…
* The jaw and pelvis are linked through fascia, muscles and the dural tube. Each area affects the other because they are part of core stabilisation. If your pinched nerve is near the pelvis, don’t be surprised to suffer from a clenched and painful jaw.
Visit your chiro or physio as soon and often as possible!
