Habit stacking merges new health goals with existing daily routines to make behavioural change effortless. By anchoring a new behaviour directly after an established one, you build neural connections without requiring immense motivation. Data suggests that women frequently leverage it within broader self-care and multitasking frameworks.

In SA, high wellness awareness often struggles to translate into consistent daily action.

Key Habit Stacking Examples:

- After pouring your morning coffee, write down one thing you are grateful for.

- While waiting for the kettle to boil, do 10 calf raises.

- Before eating breakfast, drink one glass of water.

- Immediately after closing your work laptop, take 5 minutes to meditate or practice deep breathing.

- Directly after finishing lunch, take a 10-minute walk.

How to Create a Sustainable Stack:

- Identify your anchor by choosing a consistent, automatic daily habit.

- Formulate your plan, such as “After I [current habit], I will [new habit]”.

- Choose tiny, attainable habits to ensure success and build momentum.

- Pair habits that complement each other to create a natural ‘chain reaction’.

- After completing a stack, give yourself a small reward to trigger dopamine and solidify the habit.

Statistics:

- It takes a median of 59 to 66 days for a health behaviour to become a habit, though the range can be as wide as 4 to 335 days depending on the person and the task.

- Only about 23% of participants in some longitudinal studies successfully reached the threshold for full habit formation within the study periods.

- Nearly 89% of women report practicing at least one self-care approach.

- In SA, the ability to stack habits is often influenced by external social and economic factors.

Did You Know?

The perception that women are “better” at multitasking often stems from necessity rather than biology. Women often manage a higher “mental load” (organising family schedules, appointments, and household needs) on top of their professional lives, making sequential habit stacking a vital tool for efficiency.
